Bridge building.

Early Years have thoroughly enjoyed reading the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. They learnt about how the goats outwitted the grumpy troll, in order to get across his bridge to the delicious green grass. The children have enjoyed renacting the story in their home corners and have produced some excellent handwriting connected with the story.

Early Years have also enjoyed reading about Iggy Peck Architect and how he saves his classmates by designing and working as a team to build a bridge. Inspired by these stories, the children have been practising designing bridges using careful planning to find out what materials make a good bridge, what kind of joining techniques they need to fix it together and how to strengthen the bridge to make sure it holds fast.

This included an experiment using straws and a bag of sugar, where the children needed to problem solve and find alternative solutions each time the bridge collapsed.

The week culminated in a final collaborative project in which each class designed and built a bridge using the materials and techniques on their choice. Each one was unique and are now proudly displayed in their respective classroooms. Well done everyone!
