Chinese New Year.

We have enjoyed a week of celebrations for Chinese New Year in Early Years. The children have been exploring the many different traditions that are important to Chinese people at this time of year.

We began by reading the story of the Great Race, in which we found out how each year is named after one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. The children enjoyed reenacting the story and we incorporated ordering the animals into our Maths lessons.

The children learnt about the significance of the colour red, made decorations and even took part in a dragon dance. The small friends from Bridgewater nursery came to watch us and made masks to join in with the theme.

We welcomed a special guest, who is the mother of one of our students, and were able to see how our names are written in Chinese and even had the chance to practise writing them. It was very tricky!

We also saw some beautiful Chinese scrolls, a calligraphy set and decorations from her home. They are very precious and we feel lucky to share them!

Finally we sampled some Chinese foods. We tried noodles, prawn crackers, spring rolls, and sweet and sour sauce on fried rice. Luckily we didn’t have to use chopsticks to eat them but we did practise using them in our rainbow challenges.

It was so much fun learning about about Chinese New Year and we are already looking forward to revisiting it next year!
