Diwali

Early Years had a wonderful time exploring Diwali. Some of us knew about Diwali because they attended the Diwali festival of light celebrations in Northampton town centre.

Mrs Patel came to talk to us about Diwali. She brought in some beautiful dresses and jewellery. The children loved the beautiful vibrant colours.

She told us about all the delicious foods they eat when families get together at this special time. The children made comparisons between Diwali and their own celebrations within their own families and cultures. We enjoyed sharing our own experiences.

She shared the story of Rama and Sita and how they were separated and finally reunited. The children could understand the significance of the Diva lamps. They remembered that the story is about how light triumphs over dark and good triumphs over evil.

We enjoyed making our own Diva lamps using the skills we have learnt in our clay explorations such as rolling, moulding, pinching and adding detail.

Mrs Patel also showed us a beautiful sari, and demonstrated on Mrs Wise how to fold it many times to make a beautiful and versatile outfit.

We thank Mrs Patel for leaving us with her thoughtful gifts of bindi and bracelets which she left for the children to explore and enjoy in the role play corners. We are already looking forward to the next Diwali parade!
