A visit from our local Police Community Support Officers

This week we welcomed our local Police Community Support Officers Steve, Georgia and Rose into school to speak with the Reception children about their job and how it has changed over time.

They asked the children what they thought their job was and the initial response was "to catch the bad people." They explained that their main job was to help people. They sometimes 'walk the beat' speaking to people, helping them if they are lost, giving directions. They also travel by car and motorbike and can help people if their car has broken down or if they have had an accident.

Steve explained that he had been a PSCO for 18 years and has seen some changes. He talked about how you had to be a certain height to be a Police Officer years ago but now people of any height can join ther service, which is great as it is inclusive.

Georgia and Rose talked about how Police hats had changed over time, in the past all officers had to wear the tall hat, now there are different types of hats which all have the special Police emblem on. They explained that they are all hard to protect their heads.

The children were fascinated to learn about the changes in resources that that Police use. In the past officers used to have a whistle to call for 'back up' now they carry a radio which connects to the control room and ensures that all officers are linked to each other and tracked to keep them safe.

We even got to speak to the control room via the radio, which was very exciting!

Steve showed us his notebook that he used to have to record all of his conversations in, now Police Officers wear cameras which record their conversations and carry phones to type up their notes, which is a lot easier!

The children were lucky enough to have a look at the Police van and motorbike and even heard the loud sirens. They were reminded about the importance of wearing helmets whilst riding their bikes and scooters.

Thank you so much for coming to visit us, it was such a fun and informative session!
