Physical Education: PE and Sport
Our school British Values Statement can be found in our Key Policies section of the website.
At Bridgewater we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as feeling pride in their own achievements. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mind-set to leave Bridgewater with the capabilities to be successful in their future physical ventures. We strive to support our children and families with living healthy lifestyles and give them the information they need to be able to make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.
- PE is taught using the GetSet4PE scheme of work, which builds progressively to deepen skills, knowledge, understanding and vocabulary.
- These lessons are adapted using the STEP principles (Space, Task, Equipment, People) to ensure they are relevant to the needs of the every learner.
- Teachers are able to seek advice and guidance from Year Group and Subject Leaders.
- PE should be taught for a minimum of 2 hours every week across the school. We believe this is the best way to build physical fitness, skills, knowledge and support the children in building healthy lifestyles.
- PE is mapped in accordance with the National Curriculum requirements, to ensure sufficient breadth of study and opportunities to revisit and build upon skills taught.

The impact for the learners in PE will be that they are active and confident individuals that have the knowledge and skills to live a happy, healthy life. They will understand the importance of diet and exercise and the impact it has on their bodies over time. They will develop their strength, balance, agility and coordination skills in a range of physical disciplines. They will be able to work as a team towards a shared goal and celebrate the successes of themselves and others. They will learn from their mistakes and practise reflection skills in order to move on and find ways to improve in the future. The curriculum is spaced and the children will revisit and build upon the different physical disciplines each year. PE lessons are of high quality and demonstrate pupils are acquiring knowledge, skills and vocabulary in an appropriate sequence.
Assessment Methods to Reach Summative End-of-Year Judgement |
To assess Physical Education, we: Utilise technology – record some aspects of lessons onto Seesaw, using videos and photos to analyse and plan next steps. Give individualised verbal feedback throughout lessons for next steps (this was a step suggested from pupil feedback.) RAG rate against the objectives (red/amber/green) on class grids. Collect Pupil voice within sessions and at the end of units. Provide regular opportunities for peer and self-assessment. Ensure we record achievements in Swimming onto Insight. Use the methods above to support the teacher assessment on Insight. |
Equal Opportunities
As an inclusive school, we believe that diversity needs to be embraced, celebrated and highlighted, both within the curriculum and through the culture of the school. As a result, children and stakeholders are represented fairly and accurately, with a focus on fairness. Through the careful selection and sequencing of curriculum content that develops pupils’ competence, more pupils can believe that physical education is for them and inequalities can be reduced.
All children, regardless of gender, culture or disability are given the opportunity to study the curriculum. We acknowledge and plan for the specific needs of all learners. We use the ‘STEP’ (space, task, equipment and people) principle to ensure all learners of all abilities can take part. Similarly, there are many extra resources within the scheme to support specific SEND needs.
At Bridgewater Primary School, we will endeavour to promote equality and diversity through our teaching and extra-curricular clubs (staff led and externally led) to promote a wider sporting profession as our learners head out into the wider world.
