Big School Birdwatch 2026!

We have been taking part in the ‘Big School Birdwatch’ and we have been really busy learning bird facts, birdwatching, making bird food, bird feeders, making nests and painting some beautiful pictures.

birdwatching 1 edit

To begin our birdwatching the first thing we did was have a move around and revamp of our bird feeders. We placed them in front of one of the windows in the blue room and set up a station so the children could look out of the window and observe different species of birds. We have been learning how to count the birds using the tally chart method. Over the week we have spotted blue tits, robins, wagtails and a couple of naughty pigeons who were eating all of the bird food!

As we’ve had a move around of our bird feeders we thought we could make some of our own. We covered pine cones with some lard and bird feed, which we explained to the children that they will help the birds stay healthy and warm through the winter. We practiced our threading skills and used some multigrain hoops and string to hang off the trees outside for the birds. We also made a bird feeding station with bird seed, fruit, mealworms and oats to place on top of the mud kitchen. Finally one of the grownups bought in the top of their Christmas tree, which we are going to make into another bird feeding station.

Finally we’ve been busy at the art and creation station. We’ve been making birds nests, using paper plates and paper strips to create the nests and practicing our cutting skills to cut out different bird species to stick into the nests. On the easel we have been painting some beautiful bird pictures, using photos as reference. Lastly we’ve been making birds out of air dry clay. Using our hands we rolled the clay to make balls and attached them together using slip to make the birds head and body stay together. We then poked in some feathers for the tail and added little googly eyes. We are leaving these to dry at the moment and then we will put these on display in the nursery.
