What a busy start to the term!

Since being back at nursery after the Christmas break, we have been very busy. We have been learning about winter and hibernation, recapping on some of our maths language and doing some exciting junk modelling to practice the skills we need for our art and design.

It has been very cold over the past couple of weeks and the children have noticed that there has been a lot of ice in the outdoor area. We've been filling different pots up with water to see what sorts of shapes the water will make once its frozen. Alongside this we've been learning lots about hibernation, and what animals will be hibernating at this time of year. The children had some good knowledge and suggested bears, hedgehogs, bats and mice. We've also been making sure there is lots of food out for the birds, as the children have observed them visiting more recently. Over the next couple of weeks we will be making some bird feeding stations to put in the outdoor area ready for bird week!

In maths we have been recapping on some of our maths language 'big and small' and 'tall and short.' We set a challenge for the children to sort some animals into 'big' and 'small' catergories. We will be continuing to work on our maths knowledge over the next couple of weeks, the next focus will be recognising numbers 1-5 and then 1-10.

Our final focus has been 'Junk Modelling!' We used our imagination together with different materials to create all sorts of things, such as cars, rockets, binoculars and telescopes. The children really enjoyed this activity and its great for working on their fine motor skills and learning how to attach different resources together. We have been using scissors, hole punches, pens and pencils to create their models.
